Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4)
Built upon BLS-3, environments designated with a BSL-4 classification work with the most dangerous and exotic bacteria and microbes. Diseases and infections caused by these microbes can be aerosol-transmitted and are usually fatal and impossible to treat or vaccinate against.
Regulations and safety practices include:
-Mandatory change of clothing, before and after exiting the laboratory. A Post-exit shower is also mandatory.
-Decontamination of all used materials before exiting the laboratory.
-All microbe work must be performed using a Class III Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).
-Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - Full bodysuit with air supply and positive pressure system.
Facilities designated with BSL-4 classification include: Laboratories is in a separate building or isolated from the rest of the building. Laboratories must have dedicated air supply and exhaust air systems, as well as their own decontamination systems.
