8 THINGS TO DISCARD DURING SPRING CLEANING

8 THINGS TO DISCARD DURING SPRING CLEANING

Purging is good for the soul. Getting rid of stuff during the annual spring cleaning ritual makes us feel lighter, freer. Here are eight things anyone over 50 likely has and can be rid of.

Spring Cleaning: You Don't Need These Items!

If you are over 50, then it's time to discard these items as if they only make your house cluttered and unpleasant to the eye.

Your parents’ stuff.

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and that at some point you will clean out your parents’ home. Very often, their possessions become our possessions — and that’s not always such a good thing. It’s tough saying goodbye to the reminders from the past and of the people we love.

Nevertheless, taking photos and writing down your memories are much more efficient — and clutter free — ways to preserve them. Plus you are only deluding yourself if you think your daughter will want your mom’s old dresser in her first apartment. Call a charity thrift store and see if they’ll pick it up.

Plastic storage containers.

Tupperware lids have a way of disappearing much the same as socks put in the dryer. If it doesn’t have a lid, get rid of it. And how many plastic storage containers do you actually need anyway? Do you rinse and save the container every time you bring home wonton soup? Does a pile fall out when you open the cabinet door? It’s time to toss the ones you don’t use, the ones that partially melted in the microwave and the ones without lids.

Old towels.

Even if you live near the beach, nobody needs as many towels as you probably have. By the time you reach midlife, you’ve likely moved around a fair amount. And since a fair amount of redecorating occurs each time we move, chances are you have towels in multiple colors to match all those bathrooms in all those places you lived. Toss them. You will never run out of towels even if you skim off the bottom 20 percent of the pile.

Old medicines.

Here’s a simple rule: If the expiration date has past, dump it. Old prescription drugs can actually be harmful to you. Many drugs lose their potency. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires that the active ingredient in a drug must be present in at least 90 percent of the amount indicated on the label.

Tablets and capsules have the longest shelf life and may even linger on pharmacy shelves for up to five years. Liquids and injectables, like insulin, lose their potency much faster. Hence, the danger out-of-date drugs pose. If your medications are critical to managing your disease, don’t mess around and just dispose of the old med.

Be careful how you do this. You don’t want an animal to get into your garbage.

Odd socks and old underwear.

Missing socks do not return from the dead. And there are few of life’s annoyances that can be resolved as cheaply and quickly as tossing out stretched out bras and panties and just buying new ones. A six-pack of socks will save you hours of looking for a matching pair. And dumping the mismatched sock drawer into the garbage is pure awesomeness. No, you really won’t need them for sock puppets.

Books you loved but won’t ever reread.

There is something remarkable about having a home library. But the truth is, most avid readers just have book cases that are overflowing. If you are stacking books sideways on top of others, it’s time to figure out which ones you expect to re-read.

We know: Books are like friends and when we make new ones, we don’t just discard the old ones. Consider re-homing them: The library may take them off your hands and if not, they are a thrift store favorite. Also, ever heard of Kindle?

Special occasion stuff.

Here’s a hard truth: Apply the “I have three minutes to evacuate, what am I taking with me?” rule. We can pretty much guarantee that the box in the basement with your grandma’s chipped china won’t be rushed out to the car. In fact, when did you even last look at it, let alone use it. Decluttering your life of unused possessions feels better than hanging on to stuff that you have a remote emotional attachment to.

Bratz dolls, Barbies, and baseball gloves from Little League.

Yes, your kids have grown up. Check eBay and you’ll see what your kids’ old toys are really worth now.

How Urine Cleanup Can Protect Your Health?

Exposure to cat urine and feces are some of the most dangerous bio-hazard situations that a homeowner can face. Thus, urine cleanup becomes as essential and as complicated as cleaning blood. A broad range of health hazards occur when homeowners ignore pet urine and feces cleanup. The general health of the inhabitants of a home may worsen causing infections, illnesses, and mortality in serious instances.

Hazards Associated with Cat Urine and Feces

Cat urine and feces are definitely dangerous for you. Cat feces can trigger a severe human disease called toxoplasmosis. In the first several weeks, exposure to the parasite referred as Toxoplasma Gondii can trigger flu-like signs. Once the parasite grows, a range of other neurological diseases, damaging consequences such as brain inflammation, and effects on the heart, liver, eyes and ears may also occur.

Another disease that you can suffer from after exposure to cat urine or feces is called Cryptosporidiosis. This causes diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and a host of other problems. Like toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis can influence both cats and humans. Cryptosporidiosis, like most zoonotic diseases, has the greatest effect on those with poor immune health.

Urine of all species includes unhealthy quantities of ammonia. While ammonia is discovered in different cleaning agents and industrial products, the emission is generally of a regulated type. For several days, litter boxes that are open and soiled with cat urine may generate a mild health concern. Exposure to large quantities of extremely focused quantities of ammonia in urine, particularly in cat urine, may trigger respiratory diseases as well as inflammation of the skin and eyes.

As the urine evaporates in its gaseous state, water is dispelled. As a result, the air can be contaminated by toxic fumes which can cause a number of problems to one’s airways.

Of course, if you already have pre-existing respiratory issues or a weakened immune system, you are more likely to develop health issues caused by cat feces and urine.

REALTORS AND PROPERTY OWNERS - WE CAN HELP!

We can help you more than you know. Recently, Bio-One of Orange has helped eliminate tobacco smoke odor from a rental home ready for sale. Our help does not only limit its service to cleaning. We can also help realtors and property owners get ready for sale.

How Bio-One Can Help Realtors and Property Owners

Renters do not always treat the home they reside in as if it were their own- this is no secret. Sometimes more issues come up than expected once a renter moves out and the owner assesses the residence for potential repairments. Many tenants still ignore the rule amidst cigarette prohibition rule from the lease states. We can help with tobacco odor removal!

Pets can damage a home by defecating and urinating on the flooring and or walls, which leaves an awful smell and a bio-hazard that is not easy to remove. We can help with the remediation of feces, urine, and odour from those situations!

Hoarding and neglect of throwing away food and soiled items cause mould and a bad distinguished odour. We can help with hoarding removal, mould remediation, and the awful smell!

How about a deep clean/sanitation of a residence that looks unclean, especially with COVID-19? Our proprietary chemicals are stronger and better than anything from local stores. We can make that residence sparkle and remediate any COVID germs that might be lingering...

Sometimes tragedy occurs in a home where the property owner is left to handle it- a crime or death occurs, causing damage to the home from the blood and other bodily fluids. We can help remove those bio-hazards and get the residence back in safe condition!

There is a long list of what Bio-One can do to help others. Once our clients see what we can accomplish for them, they are convinced that Bio-One can greatly help in a timely and efficient manner while doing the project correctly. Keep us in mind when you or your clients are forced to deal with any of these issues and more- we are only a call away!

CRIME AND TRAUMA SCENE CLEANERS – BEHIND THE SCENES

When First Responders leave and the crime scene tape comes down, Bio-One is always ready to help needy families. Recently, Bio-One of Orange received a call to help an apartment community as crime and trauma scene cleaners.

Upon arriving on the scene, there is always a sense of uncertainty; what is behind the closed door? The initial “shock and awe” quickly subsides to a job that needs the help of Bio-One for blood remediation. There is a need to formulate a safe game plan to properly clean such a scene.

  1. Determine where a safe biohazard and blood-free zone is located to prevent cross-contamination that could potentially contain infectious diseases. This part needs proper placement of staging process of tools, chemicals and other needed materials for quick and clean access.
  2.  All technicians must wear proper personal protective equipment or PPE in the the safe zone before getting to work.
  3.  Moving into the scene, working in small sections and cleaning with Bio-One Certified Chemicals that will destroy infectious diseases is crucial.
  4.  Blood on the carpet should undergo proper treatment, decontamination, and proper disposal. In the apartment mentioned, there was the master bedroom that had blood-stained carpet, but the bathroom had laminate flooring. In both scenes, the blood-soaked carpet and the laminated flooring needed immediate removal to introduce the subfloor for further remediation.
  5.  All biohazard is placed into a “red bag” for transportation to the medical waste facility for proper disposal following O.S.H.A. Standards.
  6.  Once all is remediated high, powered lights are used to see if there is any blood or residue left; the tiniest drops can be hidden from the naked eye...so high-intensity lighting will help illuminate any areas of concern.
  7.  Once fully treated Bio-One of Orange will give the apartment community a remediation certificate so that the staff knows it is safe to enter.

Bio-One as Crime and Trauma Scene Cleaners

Every job is different and very unique, which makes trauma and crime scene cleaning a specialized business. This type of cleaning should only be performed by trained B.O.T.S. Certified technicians. Bio-One of Orange works hard to educate apartment communities and maintenance crews about the risks involved with this type of cleaning. These can be very dangerous situations. We hope you never have to call but if in need, Bio-One is there to help during a very traumatic event.

Orange County: Back to Purple Tier

As of Monday November 16, 2020 Governor Gavin Newsom hosted a News Conference, where he updated all of Southern California's tiers to Purple. Purple Tier means that we are currently at Widespread Risk of COVID-19 Transmission.

"We are sounding the alarm,” said Governor Newsom. “California is experiencing the fastest increase in cases we have seen yet –faster than what we experienced at the outset of the pandemic or even this summer. The spread of COVID-19, if left unchecked, could quickly overwhelm our health care system and lead to catastrophic outcomes. That is why we are pulling an emergency brake in the Blueprint for a Safer Economy. Now is the time to do all we can – government at all levels and Californians across the state – to flatten the curve again as we have done before.”

With Orange County's COVID-19 cases on the rise, according to Voice of OC257 people were hospitalized, including 85 in intensive care units. All restaurants, retailers, gyms, etc. must make varying changes once again to slow the spread.

According to CA.gov, in the Purple Tier, restaurants and gyms can only operate outdoors or offer takeout services and retailers can only be open at 25% capacity.

There are steps we can all take to lower us back to the Substantial and Moderate Tiers...

  • Wear a mask in public.
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Keep at least six feet of physical distance when in public.
  • Limit mixing with people you don’t live with.
Steps for Suicide Prevention

There is a need to focus on the steps for suicide prevention. From 2000 to 2018, the suicide death rate (per 100,000) increased by 25% in Orange County; in the five years from 2014 to 2018, an average of 330 lives were lost each year, reaching an all-time high of 369 deaths in 2018.

Now in 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic, suicide rates have been on the rise. Suicide is a tragic event that shatters countless lives and it needs our attention. At Bio-One, we see suicide too often and want to spread awareness in an effort to change that rate.

According to Be Well Orange County, there are necessary steps to take to reduce and prevent suicides in our communities.

Be Well OC's Goals are:

  • Increase awareness about how to prevent suicide.
  • Increase connectedness between individuals, families and communities.
  • Increase detection of individuals in need.
  • Increase access to mental health care.
  • Reduce access to lethal means.

Be Well OC's 4 Steps to Prevent Suicide:

  1. Reach out to high risk populations to find and engage those in need.
  2. Maintain contact with those in need and support continuity of care.
  3. Improve the lives of those in need through comprehensive services and supports.
  4. Build community awareness, reduce stigma and promote help-seeking.

We hope you can take the time to check on your neighbors if you don't see them out often and/or make sure your loved ones are seeking assistance by specialists with Mental Health issues. Every little thing we can do to support one another counts.

If you or a loved one may be contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.
